Preparing the flight mission

Preparing the flight mission

  1. Define the flight area. If the area will require more than 1-2 drone batteries, create a *.kml file with the flight boundaries.
  2. Establish a local flight regime, submit a flight plan and, if necessary, obtain permits from the relevant municipal and state authorities, for example through the «Nebosvod» service.
  3. Load the flight area boundaries as a *.kml file into the route planner as a background layer. UgCS Pro/Expert is recommended; the file is loaded in «Map settings / Map layers / 2D objects / Add / Load».
  4. Decide on the target GSD (Ground Sample Distance). The flight altitude and the final accuracy depend on it directly. Important! The final accuracy of the resulting materials cannot be higher than the original GSD.
  5. Plan the flight mission; in UgCS use the «Photogrammetry tool». When planning the route, take the following recommendations into account:
    - If the terrain elevation within the flight area varies by more than 20 meters, it is strongly recommended to use the «Terrain following» mode; in UgCS, the AGL or Advanced AGL mode
    - If the flight area includes forest, set the flight altitude above 120 meters and side and forward overlaps of at least 70%, since they are set relative to the ground, while the forest is 20-40 meters higher and the treetops are closer to the camera, reducing the real overlap to 60%
    - When performing aerial photography of built-up areas or in the presence of
  6. Generate the flight mission file and upload it to the flight software.
