To assess the accuracy of the results after post-processing, mark the ground control points (GCP – Ground Control Points) and survey their horizontal and vertical coordinates during field work. Control points are points in open terrain, clearly identifiable on the photos, whose coordinates are known with surveying accuracy. Check points do not take part in processing and should not be confused with tie (reference) points.

| To check the results, it is recommended to place control points on flat, dry surfaces and survey them before the aerial survey. Roads, paths and similar features are the best surfaces for control points. Road markings, sewer manholes, crosses of contrasting paint, white plates fixed to the ground with a nail, special checkered targets, etc. are suitable as control points. The horizontal and vertical coordinates of the points must be surveyed with surveying equipment (total station or GNSS receiver). | ![Control points for DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise](https://topodrone.com/knowledge/i/293a96dfde080f02.png) | ![Control points for DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise](https://topodrone.com/knowledge/i/2a37525d95ae57a7.png) |

It is recommended to distribute control points evenly over the entire survey area.

Layout of control points on the site.

To calculate the distance between control points:

_**L=𝑅∗20 000 pix**_

_**L**_ – distance between control points
_**R**_ – ground resolution of the images

if _**R**_ = 0.025 m/pix
then _**L**_ = 0.025 m/pix \* 20 000 pix = 500 m

The coordinate system of the control points must be the same as that of the base station and of the project as a whole. When you first receive the equipment, it is recommended to collect a large number of control points, to understand the equipment's capabilities and to have a large sample for checking the accuracy of the results. Later the number of points can be optimized.
